PRIMARY SCHOOL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING

STEM workshops for primary schools

Science to investigate. Ideas to build and test.

Curriculum-linked, hands-on science for KS1 and KS2, delivered in your school. Choose a ready-made workshop or tell me your year groups and I’ll recommend one. Children investigate, make working models and test ideas; I bring the equipment and materials, lead the sessions and handle setup and clear-up.

Class workshops, half-day visits and full-day enrichment.

Find a workshop for your curriculum topic

Start with a topic your pupils are learning, or tell me your year groups and I’ll recommend suitable ready-made workshops. Every session gives children practical science to investigate, build and test for themselves.

Children building a flying model during a STEM Goes Wild forces workshop

Forces & movement

Build, test and improve moving models while investigating how forces affect movement.

Curriculum focus: Forces, comparative testing and design & technology.

A pupil investigating bubbles and the behaviour of materials

Materials & states of matter

Compare solids, liquids and gases, investigate material properties and explore how materials can change.

Curriculum focus: Everyday materials, states of matter and comparative testing.

An electromagnet model from a STEM Goes Wild workshop

Magnetism

Test magnetic materials, investigate attraction and repulsion, and explore how magnets are used in everyday technology.

Curriculum focus: Forces and magnets; electricity extensions.

A pupil looking through a kaleidoscope made during a light workshop

Light, colour & optics

Investigate light, reflection and colour through practical tests and optical models. Children observe effects and explain what they see.

Curriculum focus: Light and reflection; optics enrichment.

Children exploring sound with a balloon during a STEM Goes Wild session

Sound & vibrations

Explore how sound is made and travels. Test vibrations through different materials and make a model or a simple musical instrument.

Curriculum focus: Sound, vibration and comparative testing.

A working lemon battery and LED circuit from a school workshop

Electricity & circuits

Build complete circuits, test connections and troubleshoot working models. Children discover how electrical components work together.

Curriculum focus: Electricity, circuits and scientific enquiry.

A growing model from the Plants in Outer Space workshop

Plants & growing

Investigate what plants need to grow, explore their structures and compare growing conditions through practical activities.

Curriculum focus: Plants, growth and observation over time.

A pupil examining a feather during a living things investigation

Living things & habitats

Examine living organisms, compare their features and explore how they suit their habitats. Feather investigations connect animal structures with their functions.

Curriculum focus: Living things, habitats and animal adaptations.

Working heart and circulation models made in a STEM Goes Wild workshop

The human body

Investigate digestion, circulation, breathing or movement through hands-on models. Children build, test and explain how body parts work together.

Curriculum focus: Animals, including humans; body systems and model-making.

A pupil comparing colour changes during a chemistry investigation

Chemical reactions & changes

Observe fizzing, colour changes and other signs of a reaction. Compare results and explore how a chemical change differs from a physical change.

Curriculum focus: Properties and changes of materials; scientific enquiry.

A model space garden from the Plants in Outer Space workshop

Earth & space

Explore the solar system through models and measurement, or investigate how plants might grow beyond Earth. Practical space activities bring big ideas to life.

Curriculum focus: Earth and space, measurement and scale; enrichment.

A CSI science investigation display from a STEM Goes Wild workshop

Science detectives & history

Work in teams to solve a fictional mystery by examining evidence and comparing results. History-linked options include Time Detectives: the Gunpowder Plot.

Curriculum focus: Working scientifically, materials and cross-curricular history.

Practical science with a clear learning purpose

Ask questions, make predictions, observe carefully and talk about findings. In engineering activities, design, test and improve a working solution.

KS1

Explore plants, living things, senses and everyday materials through simple practical investigations. Children observe, compare and talk about what they notice.

KS2

Connect practical investigations with forces and magnetism, materials and states of matter, light, sound, electricity, plants, body systems and space. Children test, measure and explain their findings.

Planning your visit

How many pupils can take part?

Normally one class, with up to 36 pupils where the activity, room and agreed school-staff support allow. Final numbers and timings are confirmed before booking. Larger year groups can be split into separate sessions.

What does the school need to provide?

An agreed classroom or hall, suitable tables and chairs, and access to water or electricity where the activities need it. I’ll confirm the room requirements and setup time before you book. School staff support, supervision and first-aid arrangements are agreed in advance.

Can you adapt activities for additional needs?

Please tell me about relevant access, sensory, allergy or support requirements in advance, through an agreed private channel. We can discuss suitable activities and reasonable adjustments before confirming the visit.

Based in Bedworth. Coventry, Nuneaton and Warwickshire are the core area; Solihull, Birmingham, Rugby, Tamworth and nearby areas by arrangement.

Tell me what your school has in mind

Tell me your school and postcode, year groups, approximate numbers and preferred dates. Add a topic only if you already have one in mind. I’ll recommend suitable workshops, confirm the practical arrangements and provide a clear quotation.
